Kids’ Orthodontics and Braces

Dunn Orthodontics has two convenient locations, serving the cities of Woodbury and Cottage Grove, MN. At Dunn Orthodontics, we deliver the most comprehensive and advanced orthodontic care available in a friendly and welcoming environment. One of our more popular service offerings is early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase I treatment. The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that all children receive, at the very least, an orthodontic screening at the age of 7 allowing for more effective timing of treatment.
If a Phase I treatment is recommended it will commonly involve jaw expansion and a partial set of braces on the front incisor teeth.  Phase I treatment can take from 6-12 months generally and is followed by a period of retention while the remaining permanent teeth erupt.
Below you can learn more about the timing of orthodontic treatment including braces for kids. If you have further questions, please check out our frequently asked questions page, or contact us directly, and a team member will be happy to assist you.

When is the best time to begin orthodontic treatment?

Beginning treatment  at the optimum time during a child’s growth and tooth eruption can help ensure the greatest potential result with the least amount of time and expense. At an early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.

Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems, and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Early intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems from developing later.  With more than 25 years of experience Dr. Dunn will carefully monitor growth and development, and recommend any needed treatment at the ideal time.

At what age do kids get braces?

The age in which a child should get braces can vary, however, the age of 7 is considered optimal time for a first orthodontic screening. By that age, the first adult molars have grown in, establishing the back bite. During this time, an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. Early screening increases the chances for an incredible smile.
